Starry Night

4th grade
Starry Night

The Talk: Students were introduced to Vincent VanGogh and learned a bit about the artist's life, his use of color and how his style changed throughout his career as an artist. Parts of a short biography were read aloud and students asked excellent questions about the artist. Of particular interest was his battle with depression and ultimate taking of his own life. One student commented, "It is sad to think about all of the beautiful paintings that he could have made if he had lived." How incredibly insightful! What a great reminder that Art Talks are an opportunity for STUDENTS to talk, reflect and make connections. In viewing Van Gogh's "Starry Night", students discussed the artist's ability to create a sense of movement in the sky with swirling brush strokes. Students also learned about foreground and background. Questions posed to students included, "Would you want to visit this place? Would you want to live there?" and "How does the image make you feel?"

The Project: Students were able to recreate the Van Gogh scene using oil pastels on construction paper while listening and viewing a wonderful slideshow set to music.
