Georgia O'Keefe

Mrs. Castorena's kindergarten class learned about Georgia O'Keefe during an Art Talk held on February 27, 2012. Students saw a slide show of the artist's paintings and heard a brief history of the artist. Students were shown a color copy of "Sky Above Clouds IV" and the class was asked to guess the size of the real painting, which is approximately 8'x28' and hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago. The parents leading the Art Talk held out a tape measure for the students to see. They then gathered for a story time and at the end of the story, the students were encouraged to share with the group some of the things they would like to make art about.

There were lots of great responses and this kicked off the "Cloud About Me" project. The goal was to get students thinking about their interests and what they would like to make art about. Each student was given a mostly preassembled cloud to decorate and personalize with assorted papers, glue sticks, markers and crayons. The clouds were hung around the perimeter of the room and will be sent home with each child. It was a great day with lots of energy and new ideas that will be incorporated into future Art Talks.
